How We Learned to Play Ball Even today, girls rarely learn to play baseball, and in the mid-20th century, girls sports were nowhere near as widely encouraged as they are today. The League's players learned from their fathers, brothers and kids in the neighborhood, and in some areas could participate in softball in school or in leagues run by churches or businesses. However they learned, they all developed a passion for the game that shows through in the stories they share about their experiences.

Finding the Players and Joining the League It was one thing for Chicago Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley to decide to form a women's baseball league in 1943, but entirely another to find women to play in it. This video lays out the wide range of methods the league used to find players, and includes the players' own stories of how they learned about the league and what they had to do to join it.

Charm School As part of League founder Philip K. Wrigley's campaign to prove to the public that women could be professional athletes without sacrificing their femininity, the League in its first year set up a charm school for the players. The curriculum included things like hair care, using makeup properly, and various aspects of etiquette and posture, as well as rules of conduct for the players. The school itself was discontinued in later years, but the rules remained, and here the players share their memories of both.

Spring Training in Cuba In 1947, the year in which Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, his team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, held their spring training in Cuba in order to avoid the problems they might encounter in the American South, which was still segregated. The leadership of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League decided to follow suit, and brought all of their players there for their own spring training. The players' stories about that trip show that it was a great success, and even helped them to recruit Cuban players, despite a certain amount of culture shock, whether from the food or from the enthusiastic attention of Cuban fans.

Great Plays, Great Players Here the players share their stories about their most memorable on-field experiences. For some, there was a single moment that stood out. Others, several of whom had long careers in the league, explain what made them so successful. Some of the players had records that would have qualified them for the Hall of Fame if they were men, including Sophie Kurys, who stole 205 bases in a single season, and Jean Faut, who pitched multiple perfect games and no-hitters.

Team Travel The teams in the League were scattered about much of the Midwest, and road trips were very much part of the life of the players. Initially, they traveled by train, but soon buses became standard, and the long bus rides stand out in many of the players' memories. For several years, the League also had two traveling teams, the Chicago Colleens and Springfield Sallies, that served as training teams for prospective players. They toured across much of the country in the same bus, and played each other in exhibition games, sometimes recruiting new players along the way.

The Uniform--Oh, Those Skirts! One of the more striking aspects of the League was that its players played in skirts. The skirts were intended to help show the public that the players retained their femininity, and certainly caught people's attention, but were not exactly practical. This video tells the story of how the uniforms were designed and modified over time, as well as they players' own views of having to wear them, especially of having to slide on bare legs, which often had painful consequences.

After Baseball: Then What? The All American Girls Professional Baseball League operated from 1943 through 1954. Players came and went during those years, some choosing to leave before 1954 for reasons of their own, and others staying until the end. Once their baseball careers ended, they found other things to do. Many of them took the money they earned playing ball and used it to pay for college and went on to careers in business, education and other fields, while others married and had children. Many put their baseball careers behind them and rarely talked about them until the release of the Penny Marshall Film "A League of Their Own" in 1993 turned them into instant celebrities.

Allington's All Stars After the League folded in 1954, one of their managers, Bill Allington, recruited a group of players who wanted to keep playing, and created a team called Allington's All Stars. They were a barnstorming team, traveling from town to town across the country playing anyone willing to play them often men's teams. This video tells there story, and includes color film footage from some of their games.

Delores Lee Delores "Pickles" Lee played in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League. She was a pitcher, and known for her ability to throw multiple balls with one hand. After the league folded in 1954, she joined a touring team, Allington's All Stars, made up of women who had played in the league and were not ready to quit.

Dr. Toni Palermo – Finding Her Calling After the Game In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother’s Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Dr. Toni Palermo. Toni was one of the youngest players to play in the AAGPBL. After her playing days, she entered the convent and became Sister Toni. After Toni became a Nun, she went on to earn her Bachelor of Science Degree in English, History and Math from Alverno College. She then earned three Master Degrees and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught in the Physical Education Department and the School of Social Work at the University. We were connected by our mutual friend and fellow supporter of women in baseball, Sandy Kimbrell. Sandy saw that we were in Wisconsin and reached out to me with Toni’s contact information. We conducted the podcast on Toni’s front porch and unfortunately, we had some cicadas in the background, so the sound quality is not the greatest, but nonetheless, Toni has a great story to tell.

Field of Dreams: AAGPBL 80th Reunion A story that could only be told in Kenosha County, the Kenosha Comets were one of the four original teams of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) established in 1943, during World War II. The league was created as a way to keep baseball alive while men were off fighting in the war. The Comets played their home games at Simmons Field, a historic stadium built in the 1920s. The league faced discrimination and sexism, with many people believing that women were not capable of playing baseball at a professional level. Kenosha was one of the four original cities in the US that allowed women to form their own team and join the league, solidifying their support for the future of athletics. The women of the AAGPBL proved themselves as skilled athletes and drew large crowds to their games. In 1992, the movie "A League of Their Own" brought the story of the AAGPBL to a wider audience, and helped the Kenosha Comets' be remembered in American history. Now, over 80 years after the league was established, the AAGPBL reunion will be held at Simmons Field in Kenosha, the same stadium where the Comets played their home games. The event has the opportunity to bring together former players who played for the Comets and current high school and college level teams in baseball and softball alike. The Comets will get the chance to see one another again in a place that they once changed history. They will be able to reflect on their experiences and the impact that they had. Love Wisconsin?
