In Memoriam: Dick Drago, a Baseball Pioneer and Champion of Women’s Baseball Leaves a Lasting Legacy

The American Girls Baseball (AGB) is deeply saddened by the passing of Dick Drago. Dick was a true pioneer of the game, and his contributions to the AGB will never be forgotten. He was a fierce competitor and a great teammate, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dick spent 13 seasons pitching in the major leagues, where he won 108 games, racked up 58 saves, and pitched 1,875 innings. In 1972, he pitched arguably the best game in Royals history, a game he lost 1-0 to the Twins, going 12 brilliant innings. He ranks in the Top 10 all-time for Royals pitchers in earned run average and shutouts, and in 1971, his 17-11 record and 2.98 ERA earned him a fifth-place finish in Cy Young Award balloting.

Off the field, Dick was a dedicated advocate for women’s baseball. He was a true inspiration to the players of the AGBL, and he will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts are with Dick’s family and friends during this difficult time.
