Baseball camp for girls has a strong lineup of coaches
Three-day event opens July 19 at Cool Today Park in North Port
NORTH PORT — Top women’s baseball coaches and players from all over the country are coming to North Port to teach at Southwest Florida’s first girls baseball camp.
The camp will be held July 19-21 on practice fields at the new Cool Today Park, the Atlanta Braves new spring training stadium in West Villages.
Englewood’s Sue Zipay, who played two seasons in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, is the camp’s organizer. The venture is part of her quest to give girls an opportunity to play by starting a new organization called American Girls Baseball.
“The ultimate mission is to carry on the AAGPBL legacy by supporting and uniting all those who are currently involved in girls’ and women’s baseball programs,” Zipay said. “We want to be able to speak with one voice and we want to help provide a path for the development of young girls’ baseball skills. They should have a choice between softball and baseball with the hope they will soon have another ‘League of Their Own.’ ”
